Last trip on the Eden (probably) 16/06/2024

Just a short post today as it wasn’t a long session, to keep a record of my last river trip before I move.

I started my day pretty late, around 10.30 after some late fishing the days previous. First thing on the agenda was a trip to John Norris in Penrith to pickup an order – I always love a trip to John Norris, such a cool shop with great staff.

After that it was down to the river. The river was pretty fast and murky after some rain the day before so my chances weren’t looking the best. There was a decent amount of insects about but no rising fish. It would have been a good opportunity to break out some streamers, but alas, I’m not American so I haven’t taken up streamer fishing for trout (yet).

All in all not too an eventful trip until I lost my net. I’m really making losing my nets a habit now. I had my net attached on my sling pack with a magnet and it always gets caught and falls off. After the hike back down the trail in an effort to find my lost net, when I eventually found the net I reckoned it was time to break out the chocolate. As I was sitting on the bank and eating my sweet treat I caught a glimpse of a rise, and then another. Due of the nature of the rises and the slower water they were in, I thought they were grayling. I had to give it a couple casts before I left, I had a small brown size 20 cdc upwing and a size 14 hare’s ear on the dropper. On the first cast I got a take on the dry.

Nice little brown in the net

I was pretty surprised I managed to catch a couple fish despite the conditions – all thanks to my clumsiness and losing my net. A case of divine intervention to save my last river trip before going back south.

Conditions:

  • Pretty high wind with very strong gusts
  • water clarity not good, maybe a tad less than a foot
